The Independence High School Student Council has teamed up again this year with the UNI Dance Marathon to benefit the University of Iowa Children's Hospitals and Clinics. The students will host the first brunch on Sunday, March 1st, at St. John's Catholic Church following Sunday Mass at 10:00 a.m. The menu includes bacon and eggs. The University of Iowa Children's Hospitals and Clinics will receive 100% of the free will donations made.

The Magic of Our Memories - Iowans are a people with roots. We grow well in the black soil that blankets our state, in this land between two rivers. Here are our homes, our families, our memories. Join Mary Kay Shanley at the Independence Public Library for “The Magic of Our Memories” at 10:00 am. In this program she will discuss the importance of our memories, delighting in the commonality we share, and ways of interpreting the past – through oral histories, storytelling and journalizing. Shanley is the author of nine books, including She Taught Me to Eat Artichokes and The Memory Box. She is a regular contributor to numerous magazines, a public speaker and an instructor at the University of Iowa’s Summer Writing Festival. “The Magic of Our Memories” has been funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. We’ll also compare wing spans, make an eagle craft, have a snack, and take a look at the nest of the Decorah Eagles! Interested in the theater but don’t want to be on stage? Get involved behind the scenes! A Stage Make-Up Workshop led by Mary Burkett will be held from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Community Room. Burkett is the director of the local River Arts Theater and has directed and designed for academic, professional, and community productions in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. This workshop will introduce the student to the fundamentals of design and use of stage theatrical makeup. Participants will understand the basic techniques of stage makeup and develop a basic understanding through hands-on training with a variety of makeup types. They will play with light and shadow, dabble with liquid latex, find a new purpose for Kleenex, and everyone will look different when they leave than when they arrived. Let’s Get Fancy with Pysanky! - Come learn the basics of Psyanky egg design with Marnie Barnett at the Independence Public Library at 1:00-3:00 pm. Pysanky is the art of Ukrainian Easter egg design and a traditional craft with a history of thousands of years. The method to making these decorative eggs is similar to batik in which hot beeswax is used to draw patterns on the eggs and multiple colored dyes are then used to create intricate designs. Marnie is a local artist, teacher, and member of LACES. All supplies will be furnished. It is free and open to teens and adults only. The concert will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 115 6th Ave. NW, Independence, on Saturday, March 28 starting at 3:00 p.m. Joining Butler will be her sister Mari Butler, and friends Luke Crawford and Casey Domer, Pianist Wesley Frye will be the accompanist. Free will donations will be graciously accepted as funding for the 2015 Nordic Choir tour to Italy.
