Knowing where you are and deciding where you want to be are two important factors in life we take for granted when our cognitive skills (brain) are in working order. With age, it can be more difficult to know “where we are” — what we are capable of doing. After surgery, the therapist who works with the patient needs to know what the patient was capable of doing prior to the surgery; it determines the base line goals for the therapy sessions. For example--If the patient was able to do the dishes standing at the sink prior to knee surgery we want to ensure that he/she is able to stand for long periods of time after rehabilitation from knee surgery.
