Learn to Draw Begins: February 18, 2012Ends: February 18, 2012 Are you a budding artist or do you know someone who is? The Independence Public Library has a class for you: Learn to Draw. In this class students will be introduced to techniques such as shading, proportions, human portraits, anime, manga and other cartoon techniques. The instructor is Christina Christensen, an Independence native who was president of her college art club and lived and worked in the Chicago area. 25BCHS 2nd Annual "Spirits & Visions" Banquet BCHS 2nd Annual "Spirits & Visions" Banquet Begins: February 25, 2012Ends: February 25, 2012 The Buchanan Co. Historical Society is proud to announce the 2nd annual “Spirits and Visions” event. This program is one of several in a series of fundraisers for the Independence Wapsipinicon Mill roof project. The event will take place from 4-8:00pm at Heartland Acres Events Center, 2600 Swan Lake Blvd., Independence on Saturday February 25, 2012. The fun-filled program begins at 4pm with the “Spirits” (cocktail reception), and “Visions” of Buchanan County’s past (cast includes members of the historical society and friends). The “Visions” will be in costume, strolling among the guests during the entire evening. The buffet begins at 6pm with dessert at 6:45pm. The Desserts will be from the Buchanan Co. Historical Society recipe book and each table will have a different dessert. Cook books will be available for purchase throughout the evening. There will be a silent auction of over 40 historic items during the event. The auction closes at 7pm with the introduction of the “Vision” cast. Silent auction items include a 1907 picture of downtown Independence; 2 Independence pewter plates (St. John Convent & the Waterworks); a “Flying Horse” wooden toy manufactured in Independence 1914; Iowa and Iowa State memorabilia; framed civil war bullets; rug hooking of the Wapsipinicon Mill and much, much more.
