Clear your unpaid library fines and get a fresh start during amnesty month by donating food to those in need. Each donated food item will erase $1.00 of fines from your card. If you prefer to pay your fine with cash, that money will also go to the food pantry. Both food and fine money received throughout Amnesty Month will be given to the Independence Area Food Pantry. Library patrons will have a clear account and a fresh new start at the library! We will also be pleased to accept donations to the food pantry by those who don't have fines. Tuesday, February 2. Teens/AdultsCREATE: Mask Making. Feathers, glitter and color, oh my! Get prepared to celebrate Mardi Gras by making your very own mask at the Independence Public Library. Theater enthusiast Mary Burkett will lead the workshop beginning at 6:30 pm. In part one of this two-part workshop, participants will have the opportunity to make a remarkable papier mâché mask of their own face from Rigid Wrap Plaster Cloth. Making a paper mask will also be an option for the less daring. In part two, Saturday, February 6th, participants return to decorate their dried mask using an array of provided decorative materials including: chenille stems, beads, faux jewels, feathers, fur and fabric, ribbons, paint, and more. The workshop is open to teens in grades 7-12 and adults. Registration is required. Cardio Circuit Class will include a variety of formats using weights, benches, bands, and balls to raise your heart rate and provide a strength training work-out in 40 minutes. This class is appropriate for all fitnss levels. Please consult your physician prior to beginning this or any new exercise regimen. Class will run from February 2nd- 25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:50am- 6:30am at the Falcon Civic Center Gym. The cost is $15 per person for the entire month or $3.00 per day. Call 319-334-2606 to register.The instructor, Janet Buls, is unable to teach Step Aerobics for 1 month, so she is offering this class in it's place.

All 500 & Bridge Players Welcome Attention all 500 and Bridge card players! The Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary will hold a Card Party Fund-Raiser on Friday, February 26th, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Oak View Senior Living Complex. All are welcome to participate, providing a five dollar donation. Through the fundraising efforts of the BCHC Auxiliary, $9,000 was gifted to students continuing education in a healthcare related field and to departmental projects at BCHC in 2015. Refreshments and prizes will be available to participants throughout the afternoon. Please join the Buchanan County Master Gardeners for their annual public gardening symposium, to be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016. This year’s symposium will be the 10th annual gardening symposium offered by the Buchanan County Master Gardeners. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Independence. Our annual symposium is a bright spot to garden enthusiasts and anyone who is missing the spring and warm weather!
