Ends: September 11, 2017

Join the Independence Public Library in welcoming Dr. Tom Morain for this presentation at the Independence Senior Center @ 1:30 pm.

Dr. Morain combines two of his passions—piano and Iowa history--in this intriguing window into Iowa’s frontier past. “Hymns and Herds” takes the audience through a year in the life of an Iowa pioneer family through photographs from the 1850 Farm at Living History Farms.
The slide show images depict scenes of how Iowa families divided the heavy workloads necessary for survival in the state’s log cabin era. On piano, Morain will accompany with lively adaptations of well-known 19th-Century folk hymns.

Following the formal presentation, Morain will engage the audience in a discussion of how scenes from the past offer new insights into the strengths and challenges of today’s family life.

Sponsored by Humanities Iowa, this program is free and open to the public.

12Gangster in Our Midst
Gangster in Our Midst
Begins: September 12, 2017
Ends: September 12, 2017

Local author, Betty Brandt Passick, formerly from Fairbank, Iowa, will present her third book, Gangster in Our Midst, at the Independence Public Library at 6:30 pm.

This historical fiction is set in a small bustling railroad village along the Wapsipinicon in the 1920s. When prohibition threw the whole nation into a tailspin, Chicago gained the reputation for its underworld jungle and even the small town of Oxbow grew its own crop of bootleggers.  One day a "mystery man" shows up in Oxbow with a local girl and soon many suspect him of being a gangster for Al Capone.

We will also learn about the author’s book writing and publishing process.

Hailing from Massachusetts and conservatory trained, Kennedy got his start playing evenings of original piano music in a coffeehouse.  His music has been heard on over 250 radio stations including Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, and Music Choice.  His debut ep LANTERN was produced by the legendary Will Ackerman.  His much-awaited election into WHISPERINGS has put him into the top 300 contemporary solo piano artists worldwide.

Begins: September 26, 2017
Ends: September 26, 2017

The Postmistress by Sarah Blake will be the topic of the September book discussion at the Independence Public Library Community Room at 6:30 pm.

Filled with stunning parallels to today, The Postmistress is a sweeping novel about what happens to love during war¬time, when those we cherish leave and how every story - of love or war - is about looking left when we should have been looking right.  Weaving together the stories of three very different women loosely tied to each other, Blake takes readers back and forth between small town America and war-torn Europe in 1940.

Multiple copies of the book are now available for check out at the library and on our eReaders.  All are welcome to attend.
